Lysekammen AS · Stavanger cruise terminal

Preikestolen with a local guide

A six-hour day from the Stavanger cruise terminal: a coach through the subsea tunnels, about four hours on the main trail with a guide, then back to the ship. Pick it if you arrive by sea, have no car and want someone else to handle the logistics.

Preikestolen Hike with a Local Guide

About this experience

The listing states a six-hour day with about four hours of walking, round trip. A black coach waits in the parking area at the cruise terminal, and the drive to the trailhead takes about 40 minutes through Ryfast, the tunnel link that runs 292 m below sea level at its deepest point. Your guide grew up in a village on the Lysefjord, and it shows in the stories on the way up.

The honest bit: from May to October you don't need a guide for this trail. It is marked with red T signs, and Visit Norway says most people walk it on their own. What this tour sells is logistics. No hiker bus to book, no parking queue, no map, and lunch is sorted. For a cruise passenger with a fixed all-aboard time, that is worth a lot.

The listing gives no group cap, unlike the eight-person hikes on this site, so expect a bigger group on busy ship days. The trail starts about 270 m above the sea and the first section is fairly steep. Children under 7 and people with low fitness are ruled out.

  • Pickup just outside the ship at the Stavanger cruise terminal
  • About four hours on the main trail with a guide raised on the Lysefjord
  • Snacks, water and lunch included
  • Live guiding in English, Norwegian, Danish or Swedish
  • The plateau itself, 604 m above the Lysefjord

How the day runs

  1. StartMeet at the coach

Walk off the ship to the parking area at the cruise terminal. The guide and driver wait by a black coach.

  2. About 40 minDrive to the trailhead

The road dives under the fjord through the Ryfast tunnels, then climbs to Preikestolen Parking, about 270 m above the sea.

  3. About 2 hoursHike up

A fairly steep start, then woods, streams and the stone steps built by Nepalese Sherpas, before the views over the fjord open up.

  4. On topTime on the plateau

Tips before you book

  • Hold the six-hour length against your ship's all-aboard time before you book, and leave a margin for traffic in the tunnels.
  • Wear hiking boots. Visit Norway warns against jeans and trainers on this trail.
  • Pack a rain jacket and a warm layer even if Stavanger is sunny. The top is often colder and windier than the harbour.
  • Strollers, crutches and electric wheelchairs are not allowed on this tour.

Frequently asked questions

Where do I meet the guide?

At the cruise terminal in Stavanger, just outside the ship. The guide and the driver wait by a black coach in the parking area.

How hard is the hike?

Moderate. The trail is about 8 km return with roughly 500 m of climbing in total, and the first part is fairly steep. The minimum age on this tour is 7.

Is lunch included?

Yes. Snacks, water and lunch are all part of the tour. Bring extra food if you get hungry on hikes.

Will I be back in time for my ship?

The tour runs about six hours from the terminal. If your ship is in port for less than that plus a safety margin, look at the two-hour RIB boat tour instead.
