Preikestolen hiker buses in 2027

Two companies run hiker buses from Stavanger to the Preikestolen trailhead, and their tickets don't mix. The 2027 timetables aren't out yet, so here is the 2026 pattern and what to watch for.

No car? The hiker bus is how most independent walkers reach Preikestolen. It drops you at Preikestolen Parking, you hike on your own, and you ride back with the same company.

Neither operator has published its 2027 timetable yet. What we do know: the 2026 season shape, the ticket rules, and one stop that stays closed into 2027.

The quick answer

Pulpit Rock Tours and Go Fjords run the hiker buses from Stavanger. The 2027 timetables aren't published yet; the 2026 season runs from late March to 1 November, busiest from 20 June to 13 September. Buy online before you travel, and keep both legs with the same company.

Which buses go to Preikestolen?

Two companies: Pulpit Rock Tours, with several stops in Stavanger plus Jørpeland and Forsand, and Go Fjords, from the Radisson Blu Atlantic Hotel in Stavanger.

Both drive through the Ryfylke tunnel and stop at Preikestolen Parking. The Preikestolen Foundation puts the ride at about 50 minutes. Pulpit Rock Tours picks up at Stavanger byterminal, Olav V's gate, Klubbgata and Bekhuskaien, among others, and runs a separate leg to The Bolder, the start of the Lysefjord Panorama Trail. Go Fjords leaves from Olav V's gate 5 and asks you to be there 10 minutes early.

What did the 2026 bus season look like?

Pulpit Rock Tours ran weekends in spring and autumn and daily from 1 May to 4 October. Go Fjords ran weekends in April, May and September and daily in summer.

The 2026 Pulpit Rock Tours timetable split into five periods. Times below are from Stavanger byterminal; the last return leaves from the trailhead.

Go Fjords, per the foundation, ran two morning departures on April, May and September weekends, two a day in June and four a day in July and August. It added October departures in 2026.

Are the 2027 Preikestolen bus timetables out yet?

Not yet. Both operators still show their 2026 pattern, and no 2027 dates have been announced.

Expect the shape to repeat, with weekend service first and the daily timetable from May, but don't plan on exact times until they're published. The 2026 spring service started on 21 March, so check from late winter.

One change is already known. The Løkkeveien stop (Clarion Stavanger) has been closed since 18 March 2026 and stays shut until summer or autumn 2027. Use Olav V's gate by the Radisson Blu Atlantic instead.

How do Preikestolen bus tickets work?

Buy online before you travel; there are no sales on board. A return only works with the company you went out with.

This is the trap that strands people. The foundation says return tickets aren't valid across operators, so a Go Fjords return won't get you on a Pulpit Rock Tours bus, even with empty seats.

Pulpit Rock Tours adds two rules in its FAQ. You pick the outbound date and time, but the return is flexible and valid for up to four days. And the return only takes you back to the stop you started from. Pets aren't allowed on its buses, and dogs on the trail stay on a leash all year.

Which bus should you take to Preikestolen?

In summer, the first bus of the day, or a mid-afternoon one in high season. The 09:00 and 10:00 departures land you in the thickest crowd.

The foundation says the busiest starts are between 08:00 and 10:00, and it suggests hiking before 08:00 or in the late afternoon. A bus at 08:00 puts you on the trail before 09:00, which beats the mid-morning wave. Saturdays and Sundays are the busiest days.

Late buses work in high summer only. Count back from the last return: in 2026 that was 20:30 from 20 June to 13 September. The hike takes about four hours round trip, plus time on top, so the 14:30 bus is the latest we'd take. In spring and autumn, the last bus back leaves much earlier.

How do you get to Preikestolen when the buses don't run?

Take Kolumbus bus 100 to Solbakk and a connecting bus to Jørpeland, then a taxi. Or book a guided hike that includes transport.

Fjord Norway lists the public route: about 30 minutes from Stavanger to Solbakk, then on to Jørpeland. Regular buses stop in Jørpeland and the car park is about 3 km beyond it, uphill. Walking that road adds a lot to an already long day.

Outside the bus season, a tour with transport is simpler. The small-group hike collects you from your Stavanger hotel; the local-guide hike meets you at the cruise terminal. From November to April, read our winter 2026-27 post first.
