Booking choice: The guided hike with a local guide, 6 hours. Book this Tour details
Cruise ships in Stavanger dock right in the centre, which makes Preikestolen one of the easiest big hikes to reach from a ship in Norway. The trailhead is about 40 minutes away by road. The catch is time: the walk itself takes around four hours, and your ship won't wait.
Most products sold to cruise passengers as Preikestolen tours are boats that show the cliff from the fjord, 604 m below. That's a fine morning. It just isn't standing on top.
The quick answer
Allow about six hours ashore for the hike with transport, and more if you can. With five hours or less, take a boat: 2 to 3.5 hours from the harbour. On two-ship days, book transport early, because the morning buses sell out first.
How much time do you need for Preikestolen from a cruise ship?
About six hours for the hike: an hour each way by road and four on the trail. A boat trip needs 2 to 3.5 hours.
Go Fjords sketches a cruise-day timeline with a 09:00 bus, the top at about 11:30 and a 15:00 bus back into town by 16:00. That's tight but workable. Add your all-aboard buffer and a ship that stays at least seven to eight hours is the honest minimum for an independent hike.

Where do cruise ships dock in Stavanger?
Mostly in the city centre, at Strandkaien or Skagenkaien. Ships that dock outside the centre often run shuttle buses into town.
From Strandkaien or Skagenkaien it's about a 500 m walk to the Go Fjords bus at the Radisson Blu Atlantic, per the operator. The Rødne fjord cruise leaves from Strandkaien in Vågen, a 10 to 15 minute walk from the cruise berths, and you need to be ready to board 20 minutes before departure. The RIB tours check in by the Stavanger Maritime Museum, a few minutes on foot from the ships.
If your ship docks out of town, ask on board how long the shuttle takes, and subtract it from your day.

Should you hike Preikestolen on your own or with a tour?
On your own works with a long port day and a booked bus. A tour that meets you at the ship is safer when time is tight.
Doing it yourself means a hiker bus (online tickets only), your own pace and your own clock. If the bus back is full or late, that's your problem, not the ship's. Our hiker bus post covers the operators and ticket rules.
The local-guide hike is built for cruise passengers: the listing says the guide and driver meet you at the cruise terminal, just outside the ship, and the day takes 6 hours with snacks and lunch. The hidden trail hike can also be adapted for shore excursions, per its listing, on a quieter route in a group of eight at most.

The hike made for port days: pickup outside the ship, a local guide on the trail, and a 6-hour day that brings you back in time.
Book this Tour detailsWhat can you do with only four or five hours in port?
Take a boat. The RIB takes 2 hours, the catamaran 2.5 and the electric cruise 3.5, all from the harbour by the ships.
The RIB tour is the quickest and wettest: floating suits, goggles and gloves are included, and its listing calls the schedule cruise-optimised. Ages 6 and up. The electric cruise is the comfortable one, with indoor seating and wheelchair access, and Rødne says extra departures may be added on cruise days. The catamaran sits in between at 2.5 hours, with audio commentary in six languages.
All three pass under the cliff and close to waterfalls, and none of them lands. Our boat or hike guide weighs the trade-off.

Book thisWhat happens on days with several cruise ships in Stavanger?
Seats go fast. From 2026 the port's plan limits traffic to two cruise calls and 8,000 passengers a day, plus one small ship.
Region Stavanger's cruise action plan sets a limit of 8,000 passengers per day, two cruise calls per day and seven per week, with room for one extra ship of up to 600 passengers. That still means thousands of people looking for the same morning transport.
Go Fjords warns that morning buses sell out first on multi-ship days. Third-party schedules such as CruiseDig already list two-ship days for summer 2027, so check yours when you book the cruise and buy transport the same week. On those days a pre-booked tour with a fixed pickup beats hoping for a bus seat.

Is the RIB and hike combo realistic on a cruise day?
Only on a long call. The operator designs it for ships in port 8 hours or more and may shorten the day to get you back.
The combo is the one trip that gives you both views: a RIB safari under the cliff, a drop-off in the fjord, a minibus to BaseCamp and a guided hike to the top. It lasts 7 hours, groups stop at twelve, and it meets in front of the Maritime Museum, behind the fish market.
Don't book it for a ship that leaves before late afternoon. The listing is clear that the 8-hour rule is there for a reason, and it describes the hike as moderate with about 500 m of climbing over 8 km. Check our hike time guide if you're unsure about the pace.

Both sides of Preikestolen in one day: fast RIB under the cliff, then a guided hike to stand on it.
